The mountain Pico is the highest mountain of Portugal with its 2.351 meters of height.
This mountain seems harmless during nice weather, but can rapidly change to completely cloudy. Even though the waypoints are very clearly marked it can then be difficult to find your back.
During spring and autumn snow can fall unpredictably on the top quarter of the mountain (during winter this happens quite often).
You start at roughly 1.200 meters - the difference of altitude to the top is covered in only 3,5 km - this means that the way to the top is quite steep. Rain or fog make the path very slippery, the steps are partially very high.
In the past bad weather dips have been the cause of climbers in emergency.
To prevent these unwanted situations it is obligatory to engage a professional mountain guide when climbing Pico.
